FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DO I GET THERE?
The easiest way is to hop on a bus or train! Bukit Pasoh Road is easily accessible by MRT (Outram Park Exit H). You may also take bus services 61, 166, and 197 (alight at Pinnacle @ Duxton, Stop ID 05239); 124, 143, 147, 961 (alight at Outram Park Station, Stop ID 05069); and 2, 12, 33, 54, 63, 124, 143, 147, 190, 851, 961, 970 (alight at Pearl’s Hill Terrace, Stop ID 05019).
If you’re taking a taxi or hiring a car, please alight at Dorsett Singapore as Bukit Pasoh Road will be closed for our street festivities!
IS THERE PARKING?
Bukit Pasoh Road will be closed during the event, so roadside parking is not available from 5-10pm on Friday, 8 March, and 11am-10pm over the weekend (9-10 March). The nearest parking is available at Keong Saik Road, Teck Lim Road, and Craig Road.
DO I HAVE TO BUY TICKETS?
We have a mix of free, non-ticketed events, as well as talks and masterclasses that require the purchase of tickets. We have worked hard to keep ticket prices for these talks and masterclasses as accessible as possible. Tickets are available here.
CAN CHILDREN ATTEND?
You betcha! Our masterclasses and design talks are targeted at adults, but children are welcome at the various clan open houses. There’s also plenty for families to explore along the street.
ARE YOU ELDER-FRIENDLY?
We welcome all elders with open doors! Please note that because Bukit Pasoh Road is a heritage strip, some areas may not be wheelchair-friendly and only accessible by narrow staircases.
WHAT IS STREET OF CLANS?
Street of Clans is a creative festival organised by OuterEdit. This is our first iteration and we are proud to have it in our neighbourhood of Bukit Pasoh! Happening from 8-10 March 2019, Street of Clans is also a proud anchor programme of Singapore Design Week 2019. A creative festival is exactly what it sounds like: a big neighbourhood party celebrating Singapore’s creative communities! Paying tribute to the many clan associations along Bukit Pasoh Road, this festival puts the stories of clans front and centre. Discover their histories through interactive installations, or wander the neighbourhood looking for modern day clans. We also have masterclasses that fuse tradition and innovation, and intimate design talks that foster a sense of community in the local creative scene.
WHAT EXACTLY IS A CLAN?
Great question! You should come to the festival to find out more ;)
As a primer, a clan is a community of people that share resources to support each other. They were first formed in Singapore when privileged Chinese immigrants wanted to better support their less fortunate or newly arrived kinsmen. Clans at that time were founded in various ways: mainly through a common surname (e.g. ‘Koh’ or ‘Lee’), but also by locality (where the immigrants came from), and less frequently by trade. Clans still exist today, but their roles have changed dramatically from when they were first set up.
